Long-term simulations of thermal and hydraulic characteristics in a mountain massif: the Mont-Blanc case study, French and Italian Alps

چکیده
The use of hydrothermal simulation models to improve the prediction of water inflows in underground works during drilling is tested in the Mont-Blanc tunnel, French and Italian Alps. The negative thermal anomaly that was observed during the drilling of this tunnel in 1960 is reproduced by long-term, transient hydrothermal simulations. Sensitivity analysis shows the great inertia of thermal phenomena at the massif scale. At the time of tunnel drilling, the massif had not reached thermal equilibrium. Therefore, a set of simulation scenarios beginning at the end of the last glacial period was designed to explain the anomaly encountered in the tunnel in 1960. The continuous cooling of Alpine massifs due to infiltration of waters from the surface has occured for 12,000 years and is expected to continue for about 100,000 years. Comparisons of water discharge rates simulated in the tunnel with those observed indicate that this hydrothermal method is a useful tool for predicting water inflows in underground works.

متن کاملTheoretical relation between water flow rate in a vertical fracture and rock temperature in the surrounding massif
A steady-state analytical solution is given describing the temperature distribution in a homogeneous massif perturbed by cold water flow through a discrete vertical fracture. A relation is derived to express the flow rate in the fracture as a function of the temperature measured in the surrounding rock. These mathematical results can be useful for tunnel drilling as it approaches a vertical col...
متن کاملInstability of a High Alpine Rock Ridge: the Lower Arête Des Cosmiques, Mont Blanc Massif, France
Rockfalls are dominant in the rock slopes and rock ridge morphodynamics in high mountain areas and endanger people who pass along or stay there, as well as infrastructure that host them (cable cars, refuges). Risks are probably greater now because of fast permafrost degradation and regression of surface ice, two consequences of the atmospheric warming of the last decades. These two commonly ass...
متن کاملModelling the diversion of erratic boulders by the Valais Glacier during the last glacial maximum
In this study, a modelling approach was used to investigate the cause of the diversion of erratic boulders from Mont Blanc and southern Valais by the Valais Glacier to the Solothurn lobe during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model, we simulated the ice flow field during the LGM, and analyzed the trajectories taken by erratic boulders from areas with characteristic ...
